Enloe's Emanuel Chapman drives in for two versus Wakefield mens basketball

Enloe looks for the big payback at Wakefield

Friday February 5,2010

#3 Enloe came into the game looking to avenge a Jan. 6 67-66 loss to #5 Wakefield.  That defeat came on the Eagles floor and gave the Wolverines an early advantage in the tight Cap-7 standings.

Tonight the Wolverines needed to complete the season sweep of the Eagles to give themselves some breathing room over the #15 Broughton Caps.  Enloe was looking to capture their third consecutive win and separation from the rest of the Cap-7 crowd at #2.

The opening half was tight the entire way as the teams went back and forth.  Enloe gained enough control to take a 28-24 lead into halftime, by establishing Jared Blakney, Melvin Tabb, and Marcus Walker inside.

In the 3rd quarter, Enloe’s DJ Rich came out on fire, scoring 7 points in the opening two minutes of the period.  Rich scored 15 of his team high 16 points in the 3rd.  Despite Rich’s outburst, the home Wolverines used an energized team effort to put up 24 points in the quarter and take a 48-47 advantage into the 4th.

In the final stanza, Enloe took control by making Wakefield earn every point.  Eagle coach Tommy Moore used a fullcourt press at times to slow Wakefield, but the Wolverines managed to stay close most of the period.

With less than two minutes remaining, Enloe had done enough to hold a 60-54 advantage, but late turnovers and big plays from Wakefield made things interesting.  With 40.2 on the clock Xavier Saddler-Lee stepped to the line and connected on two free throws to make the score 60-57.

Wakefield tied up the ball with 9.8 left and took the alternating possession, but only got two points as Enloe’s payback was complete with an equally stinging 60-59 defeat of their Cap-7 rivals.

Keith Armstrong played an excellent game in the paint for Wakefield, keeping possessions alive with rebounds and putting in 16 points.  Blakney was Enloe’s second leading scorer with 12 points.

Enloe and Millbrook are on a crash course for a Feb. 12 showdown to determine the #1 conference seed.
